    Preparation

    1

Dice or tear the bread into small pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.

    2

Add 2/3 cup cold water to the bread and let it soak for 5 minutes. Mash with a fork.

    3

Add the ground beef, Italian sausage, egg, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese to the bowl. Mix well with your hands.

    4

Divide the meat mixture into 22-23 meatballs (about 1.5 inches each) using a trigger-release ice cream scoop.

    5

Roll each meatball with your hands, then dredge in flour, tapping off the excess.

    6

Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

    7

Sauté the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides (about 2 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.

    8

In the same pot, sauté the chopped onion for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    9

Add the minced garlic and stir for 1 minute.

    10

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add the bay leaves, and bring to a light boil.

    11

Return the meatballs and any accumulated juices to the pot. Submerge the meatballs, partially cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.

    12

Five minutes before the sauce is done, add the minced basil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

    13

Combine the cooked spaghetti with the sauce and stir until evenly coated.

    14

Serve family-style, garnished with more fresh basil and grated parmesan cheese.

    Notes

The meatballs will not be fully cooked through during the browning step; they finish cooking in the sauce.
